How to Do a Door Lock Change

Change your door lock is a simple and affordable way to improve the security of your home. However,  window and door lock repair  isn't for all. It requires a certain amount patience and expertise.

The cylinder is located within the knob body. The cylinder recognizes the key once it's inserted into the lock.

Removal of the old lock

First, remove the lock that was previously in place. It's a relatively simple process, but you must keep certain things in your mind. Make sure the new lock fits the door. This will ensure that it fits snugly and does not leave a gap in the deadbolt plug or latch.

After you have removed the latch plate, look for two screws or bolts on the inside of the casing that hold the casing and the halves of the lock together. Unscrew them using the help of a screwdriver, and then pull the lock out of the door. If you have a mortise locking, there could be a set screw at the base of the handle that holds it to the spindle. Use a screwdriver to unscrew this screw, then remove the doorknobs.

Remove the deadbolt as well as the latch plug from the door jamb. Then, you can install your new lock. If you are replacing a mortise you must determine the distance between the lock case and your door's edge to make sure that the new lock will fit.

There are a variety of reasons that could prompt you to change the door lock, including suspecting that someone else has the key or if you're welcoming an incoming roommate. You could save money if you remove the lock yourself instead of paying a professional. It's easier than most people think and can be completed in just a few minutes.

Remove the handle and trim of your door. With a flat screwdriver, remove the trim. You should be able to twist off the majority of it. In certain cases you might be able to take off the handles completely. The next step is to look for a hole on the inside of the handle and insert straightened clips into it. This will trigger the release mechanism, allowing you to remove the handle. Then, look for another small tab on the interior of the lock and press it with a screwdriver that is flat. After the spindle is removed, you can take off the cylinder and housing.

The process of selecting a new lock

When it comes time to pick the right lock for your home there are a lot of options. Take a look at various kinds of locks, and select one that fits your door's style. Consider the backset which is the distance between the edge and the center of the hole in the lock. Also, consider the cross bore, which is a small hole at the edge of your door frame. Select a lock that is suitable for the door's thickness and the swing.

Most door locks are graded by BHMA and the American National Standards Institute to provide you with an idea of how well they are able to withstand the rigors of use and how difficult they are to disable or pick. A lock grade 3 might be ideal for a peaceful apartment complex in the countryside, whereas a lock of grade 1 may be better suited to an area with a lot of traffic, such as an open-air storefront.

Most smart door locks require a digital key code to open. If you're worried about hacking or other security issues you should consult an expert locksmith or your local police department for assistance.

Replace the cylinder

It is easy to replace damaged or broken doors lock cylinder by doing a simple DIY project. It is important to select the appropriate cylinder and follow all instructions. The first step is to take off the handle or knob should there be one then loosen the trim that is attached to the base of the lock cylinder by using a screwdriver. After the trim is removed, you can reach the screws that secure the cylinder and remove them with a flathead screwdriver. The cylinder is then gently pulled from the door.

Be sure to take measurements of the length of the new cylinder prior to installing it. Take a measurement of the distance from the center to the left and right sides of the cylinder using the aid of a tape measure. Buy a new cylinder that has the same measurements. This will stop cylinders from snapping when the door is hit or the key is stuck inside.

Insert the replacement cylinder in the door, and then turn the key. This will align the cylinder with the carrier which is located usually on the outside of your lock. Then, you can loosen the set screw which is supposed to be a couple of turns in the head. If there is a screw on the exterior of the case that is holding the door, you will need to loosen it.

After removing the lock cylinder and replacing it with a new lock by slipping the new cylinder into the case and tightening the set screw. It is also recommended to reinstall the bracket that connects the cylinder to the stem of the lock indicator, which you can do by pulling up three small tabs on the back of the cylinder using needle-nose pliers. Then, you'll be able to attach the remaining smaller bracket to the back of the cylinder. You should then reinstall the latch plate and strike plate, as well as the retaining rings attached to the top of the lock cylinder.

Installing a new lock

Begin by measuring the door's width if you are replacing a lock that is already in use. Most residential locksets are designed for a door thickness of 1 3/8 to 1 3/4 inch. If your door is more than 1 3/8 to 1 3/4 inches, you'll need a stronger door kit. This will require longer screws and either an extended spindle extension or the tail piece for door knobs.

Most locks come with a comprehensive instruction booklet that will help you install the new hardware. Before you begin, go through the instructions to ensure that you've followed the steps. The guide will also provide you with an idea of the level of expertise required to perform the task. It is possible to ask a friend who has had experience in changing locks for assistance if you are changing a lock the first time.

Before installing the new lock it's recommended to cover the holes with tape the old hardware. This will stop screws from slipping through the holes, and also protect any tiles you might have installed. It will also protect your tiles from damage caused by rust, dirt and grime. SECURAM Touch comes with a strip of painter's tape, which is designed to be used for this purpose, but you can also use gaffer's tape or masking tape when you have it.

After you have removed the screws that hold the lock's inner half to the outside and remove the lock immediately. This must be done quickly to prevent the lock from closing accidentally and harming the mechanism.

If your new lock is equipped with a latch bolt, fit the new bolt into the upper cross bore. Make sure that you put it in the correct position as marked by an arrow on the faceplate. Then, you can screw the latch plate onto the bolt.

Screw the deadbolt to the door jamb. Test the deadbolt by throwing it a few times to verify that it is extended all the way through the strike plate and is secure. If you're using an electronic smart lock, make sure to follow the instructions to program it. This involves downloading an application and creating an email address, verifying your identity, and accessing the wireless network to add your device.
